Letter to Meg

Meg Cabot,

I discovered your writing when I was in middle school. I first read Princess Diaries when I was in 6th grade. I connected with Mia because I often felt I was an outcast and struggled with public speaking. I still remembering lying down on a church pew waiting for my Mother to finish our Church Choir practice and discovering the mind of Mia and her quest for self-actualization. I have followed all of your written works since then, particularly enjoying your newest Abandon series. I learned more about myself with each book of yours I read. I enjoyed that your characters were not necessarily born or started the books as these epically strong females, but became them. They grew and developed and learned to be strong women.
As an avid reader I was quite upset when the New Adult genre took over in the past few years. While I want to read books aimed for college students, as a college student myself, I do not want to read graphic sexual scenes or intense violence. Most disappointing was the many young adult authors whose words I had grown up with and enjoyed switching their series midway or starting a new series in the new adult genre. The genre began gaining momentum and popularity with authors the same year you were finishing the Heather Wells series. Rumors abounded as to whether or not you would follow the crowd and make the series switch into New Adult. I wanted to thank you for not changing the series at the end by graphically going into detail about their sex lives.
Research has shown that readers are Exposed to about 30.23 acts of aggression after reading one hour of novels compared to 18.46 acts of aggression when watching an hour of TV (Coyne & Archer, 2004). I think that the new adult genre, with warnings for sex and violence intended for mature audiences, will likely only cause this divide to increase and books to show even more aggression.
I want to end this letter by asking you to use your influence to show the increased need for Amazon to better label and categorize their books. You are already an example to fellow authors that you do not need sex to sell and that success for a series can come without creating novels that many readers may be uncomfortable or unable to read due to graphically sexual scenes. But since amazon is still working on labeling its products, especially new adult kindle books, with warnings it can be difficult for consumers or parents to realize that the book they have purchased for someone or themselves will contain inappropriate scenes midway through.
I sincerely hope you consider what I have said and continue to write clean books as well as influence others to either write clean books or use warnings for others to be aware of what they are purchasing! Books don’t have a rating system so we rely on the genre and the warnings of sites like amazon or goodreads to help insure we have a clean book. Help continue the campaign for increased labeling and awareness.

Thanks,
Lisa Norton

Media Memories

So recently Disney acquired the rights to Studio Ghibli. This is a Japanese animation studio that was a favorite of mine when I was younger. They are famous for movies like Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, and My Neighbor Totoro. And Disney has recently released these classics on DVD.

I purchased Kiki's Delivery Service at Target and watching it was a walk down memory lane. I love the story of growing up and becoming your own person. It is really touching. Some of the wisdom of the DVD I adhered to as I grew and so it has a powerful resonance in my soul. And it is rated G so it was a movie I was allowed to watch on Sundays.

I loved our class discussion, some weeks ago, on books that influenced us. I believe that movies often have similar aspects. My family still quotes movies of my childhood, including Chipmunk Adventure and The Goofy Movie. They have influenced all the siblings in some way.

My favorite media memories are the series that fostered my love of fairy tales. It was Shelley Duvall's fairy tale theater. Unlike Disney, these are the true fairy tales, many of which are more about teaching lessons then about happy endings.

It is always fun to enjoy watching the movies that touched your heart as a child and influenced who you became.

LDS Gender Survey

I participated in the LDS Gender Survey currently making the rounds on social media, especially Facebook. Facebook and social media is an amazing tool for reaching a wide variety of people. But in this case while I enjoyed the survey it was a bit difficult to take and misleading to me.

This article by the Herald Extra answered some questions I had including that it is actually not even related to the Church (I didn't think so, but was unsure) nor is it sponsored by the church. It also explains a bit about the funding for the research which was Kickstarter. Crowd-source funding is an amazing aspect of media that really allows for so much to be done, but that is probably a tangent. Maybe my next post.

I guess my thought is that the research is interesting, but the internet can easily have sources that seem misleading or confusing. And that sometimes surveys can be really emotional or difficult especially when pertaining to religious topics.

The internet is a great tool for doing research, but think before you participate and share. But also take the time to participate in research that can help you understand more about yourself and your faith (even if it is not church sponsored)

If you would like to take the survey the link is here: https://georgiasouthern.co1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_7ZOwz9Tl8qzd3G5&i=R_719WppofGjWDq7z

Obviously I found the experience to be a bit conflicting and can't really decide what I think. But I am interested to see the results of their research.

Media Mock Trial

I was really impressed by the class mock trial. I learned a lot about media and the first amendment. But I think the biggest thing I took away was viewpoint discrimination.

You would think that most parents would want to protect their kids from the harmful effects of violent media, but I think that the government intervening to assist parent is going to far.

To say you are restricting offensive material is one thing, but the problem, viewpoint discrimination, would create massive conflict. I am an avid Harry Potter fan, but some groups found it offensive enough to burn! Violence in Disney shows is excessive and yet it is aimed toward children. So much of life is a conflict of opinions. And if the government give preferential treatment to one definition of offensive it alienates the rest of the population.

I guess what I am trying to say is I learned that government intervention needs to be carefully regulated. We may need the government to assist in some matters, but only in matters that don't take away our rights to make decisions for ourself about what is good or bad for us or for our children.

Gamer Girl: Casual Edition

I am a gamer. I enjoy various platforms, including 3DS, PC, and Xbox. And while I really enjoy the escape of gaming and have at times worried I'm a statistic for the displacement hypothesis, I have used gaming to procrastinate homework assignment, I was grateful that I have never developed an addiction.

I do binge in massed practice when I first buy a game, but most weeks I am very distributed. Some weeks I don't have time to play at all. Others I play 3-4 hours or even 6-8. But hardly ever more then that.

Learning about all the difficultly and withdraw with video gaming made me both grateful I don't have that, aware of people I know who probably do, and a desire to protect my future family from those effects.

I also say that in moderation and as a stress relief I think gaming helps me do better in my schoolwork. You have to have balance in life and use time management so I think it just depends on your power of decision and your self-control.

I will always enjoy the casual gaming lifestyle. And I think it helped shape my life.

The "Cult" of Disney

I love Disneyland!! I just wanted to put that first. Before jumping into my media experience at the "happiest place on earth"!

First off I know that it makes sense that everything at Disneyland is Disney related. But the experience begins way before that! The hotels in the area are "Disney Good Neighborhood Hotel"s to show they are approved by Disney. The Streetlights have Mickey on top, the food is all shaped in Disney shapes, this list could go on forever.

I guess I just realized that they literally use every sense (touch, taste, sight, smell, and sound) and then stimulate it in a way that makes you think of Disney. It is branding to a whole new level!

Also side note I finally saw the show World of Color which is amazing and also shows so much Disney!!

So I guess my thoughts were that even at a park where your focus is on rides, the media surounding you is very specific. And humorous. And eye grabbing.

I think my favorite was learning about Disney conspiracies. Like Walt Disney got the idea for Mickey Mouse from an Egyptian mouse worshipping cult.

I think this also made me realize the power of corporations like Disney. The have their own channel, radio station, theme park, etc. Their ideals can absolutely influence you. So watch how much you consume/internalize.

On the road to Disney

Driving ten hours to Disney for my 22nd birthday was a big reminder for the importance of media. We definitely made use of music. It was positive mood management when we were all getting cramped and crabby. We also used it as background noise. Finally it was a distraction to help us stay awake!!

I think we only turned off music for 30 mins of the ten hour drive.

Finally my friend almost forgot her phone. When I mentioned that it was good she noticed right away so she could run back for it, her response was so typical of society. She said can you even have fun? How can you last without pictures, snapchat, Instagram? It made me think of how much we use our phones for purposes other then typical communication.

Maybe I will post disney pictures next time!

The power of Humor

I read an interesting essay in my SFL 290 class about how utilizing humor in teaching increases attention and learning. It was just after our unit on advertising. It made me think of how effective humor is in advertising.

I believe this is because it relates to both the feel and connect factors of advertising. Humor plays on our emotions. They make us laugh and then we often connect with the ad. Maybe we connect to the situation or we find humor in it because we relate to that humor. Sometimes I connect to ad because I can put myself in the ad.

Humor can help us correlate and create a relationship between us and the product. I find that I am more receptive and susceptible to ads with humor.

It is amazing to me how much humor does! It helps us learn and can keep our attention and spark our interest. What is your experience with humor?

Video Games for Life

So I'm looking forward to our video game discussion as a video gamer myself. I get frustrated often by the narrow minded viewpoint people have on violent video games. I read this article in one of my other classes and while I disagree with some points, I think that it at least is a good discussion tool.

I think people often are so focused on negative that they don't bother to accept or try and understand the positives of video gaming.

So the article is Here

I hope you enjoy it. And see that both sides can be right.

Conference Media

A prime example of good media being of God is General Conference. With conference weekend comes an amazing amount of good, related media.

During conference I love to watch the church's official twitter for specific quotes that I can copy down as well as for occasionally catching phrases I missed. I like following the #LDSconf because it also has quotes, pictures, and other conference related goodness.

I also think that facebook status and this conference the I'm a Mormon profile pictures all made the weekend a social media haven for spreading the gospel, having friends ask questions, and sharing our beliefs.

The devotional by Elder Bednar about Social Media kept coming in to my mind as I watched and participated in the Social Media Conference Events this weekend. I really think that it is a good push for member to promote their beliefs and stand as disciples online.

Public Wifi at Airports

This weekend was crazy as I flew to Arizona for my brothers wedding. But something I found interesting was that the Phoeniz Airport has two wifi options. You can of course pay for fast, decent wifi for a certain time period. Or you can get free wifi IF you are willing to sit through about 5 mins of advertisement videos. Then you get your wifi.

I though it was both creative and annoying. People expect wifi and want it free so they make it conditionally free. It gives them a chance to get sponsors (the ad was different from when I arrived there and was waiting to be picked up and two days later waiting for the plane to leave).

Advertisements really are everywhere. Even just trying to access wifi can now expose you to ads!

I dislike advertisements for many more reasons and especially when a sibling was studying advertising and switched majors because she felt it was too manipulative. But I also realize they open a variety of jobs and help the economy in some ways.

Guess you can't win

My Songs

Talking about music and songs that have influence us made me look at the songs I use for personal identity, staying happy, getting over anger, and helping me feel less sad.

The song I choose in my class as the biggest part of my current personal identity is home by Phillip Phillips. I love that it reminds me I'm not alone, it helps me when I get lonely, and it is my favorite way to get out of a funk. I am so close with my family and it makes me think of home so I listen to it when I get homesick and it makes me smile.

Another song I thought of for negative mood enhancement is get off my back from the movie Spirit. I loved that movie and my sister used to playing when she was upset. And it became a song I use when I'm angry.

Last for positive mood management a recent favorite of mine has been shake it off by Taylor Swift. I like the reminder to not let what people say get to you.

The Problem with Live Television

Yesterday was the season premiere of The Big Bang Theory, one of my favorite shows. Each episode is 21 minutes long. I was so excited for the 1 hour special that started at 7pm last night. But what I didn't realize is it wasn't actually an hour special, like some shows actually have. They simply were airing the first two episodes back to back.

So while it took an hour of time, as it was scheduled from 7-7:30 and 7:30-8, It was 42 mins of a show and 18 minutes of commercials. Which is only 3 minutes away from being a third episode!

So the problem with the media of live TV to me is that it creates a time vacuum. Especially "1 hour" specials like the one mentioned. You are putting about as much time as an episode in being shown advertisements that are not always good media.

I probably should have know this sooner or realized it sooner. But last night as I realized I had been tricked and I sat through 18 minutes of stupid commercials I felt I would much rather watch TV shows on netflix then have to be exposed to a variety of ads that I don't care about.

Thanks for reading my rant,
Lisa

The Smartphone Epidemic

My sister used up almost our entire data plan by using her phone without having it connected to the apartment wifi. Whoops! This lead to us not being able to do anything "smart" on our smartphones since the data plan is split between four girls. No pinterest when your board waiting or any other apps unless you have wifi. Because I had to be so careful with using my phone when I wasn't connected to wifi, I was made more aware how often I use it. I think I may have underestimated my media usage in the class activity we did.

Because I could only use my phone in my apartment or when I had campus wifi, I realized how often I use it unnecessarily. During a commute to SLC when I could be socializing is one example. And then because I couldn't I noticed how many people are always staring at a phone screen.

When you at dinner with friends, don't be playing a game on you phone! 1024 can wait! So can your desire to get to 2048. Because honestly why does that even matter? I am just as guilty of being prone to be on my phone during conversations etc. But having to quit made me want to quit more permanently.

I find my smartphone to be very good. It is my GPS in the car, I can check my mail, I can text and call home, and many other things. But this was a reminder to put down your phone and converse when your with people. And don't make your smartphone your life. Real communication is much more fun.

Cheers!

10 Books That Have Influenced Me

So since this challenge has been going around social media I figured it would be a good place to put here as apart of my media series of posts. Here are 10 books that have influenced me in good ways. So this would all be books I feel are good/positive sources of media because they have influenced me for the better in some way. Here they are, in no particular order:

  • The Book of Mormon: Filled with spiritual guidance and other nuggets of wisdom. I have only read it straight through 3 times but I find that every read provides me with something new to learn and grow from.
  • Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling: These were some of my childhood friends and I love that the series grew with me. Definitely an example of my best para-social friends.
  • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien: This was a favorite of my mothers and so when she shared it with me and I finally read it in high school it was a family favorite. It taught me about friendship and adventure and that heroes came from all sorts of places and experiences. It taught me to be brave.
  • Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce: This book series created my love for Tamora Pierce and I have read many of her books since. I actually just re-read it for maybe the 10th time this weekend. It is about accepting others for who they are, not judging by appearances, and second chances. I love it!
  • Slathbog's Gold by M.L. Forman: I picked up this book when I moved to a new place. The series characters became my friends when I had no friends in my new home. I loved the main character as he learned to be a friend. He is so selfless and caring. I aspired to be more like him, and still do.
  • A Modern Witch by Debora Geary: One of the first adult book series I read when I became and adult. I love the relationships, the magic, but mostly the words of wisdom. Every book makes you cry and every book teaches more about yourself and who you want to become. And it teaches you how to get through trials with family and a sense of humor.
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen: My first introduction to Jane Austen, and Mr. Darcy, made me a romantic. It is a lovely example of learning not to judge others and to be humble. This is a classic for a reason.
  • Hamlet by Shakespeare: The first Shakespeare play I read and created my love of his work. I think that each of his plays teach a ton, but this one creates an inner dialogue about revenge and the cost of revenge. I also think it makes you really think about mental disorders.
  • The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale: A princess who is different and forced to go through an ordeal because of her station. And then how she overcomes the many trials and pain that come from betrayal. I loved the example of a strong female character and wanted to be a princess like Ani.
  • Fairest by Gail Carson Levine: A story of a girl learning to accept herself for who she is. I really loved the lessons in the book as well as how they are mixed with magic and fairy tales. If you love snow white you will love fairest.
So these are ten books that I still continue to re-read and have helped shape me into a better, more accepting person. They helped shape me as a child and teenager and I love what they make me remember in my adult life.

Enjoy,
Lisa Jean

Media and My Life

So since this blog ended up becoming a mess of random posts I felt it would be perfect to use for my class on Media, family, and human development. The assignment is to make two entries a week about the media content I was exposed to and my thoughts on it. Good? Bad? Effects? Etc?

To start I will say that my biggest forms of media are

1. Movies and Television
2. Books
3. Video Games

The order actually varies depending on my amount of free time and my current stress level. I also am a big multi-tasker with media. I love to play video games with a background show/movie.

This past weekend was the SLC Comic Con. Since I am a fangirl of many things I went both Friday and Saturday. I even got to meet Simon Helberg, from Big Bang Theory! Which was super fun since it is one of my favorite shows. The witty humor is really great, though the show can get a little sexual.

My experience at comic con was that I ended up spending more money on books then I spend on the ticket to go! I enjoyed panels on writing and literature. Since one of my goals is to someday write something, and make use of all the stories I create in my head, I thought that was fitting. One of the panels was really fun because both Authors are LDS and write clean books middle grade and young adult readers. I have read several of their different series. Here is Shannon Hale and Brandon Mull.

So this weekend I found that my media exposure was quite high. I spent time traveling on the front runner listening to music. Most of which I think had good effects on me. It made me happy, helped time pass quickly, pumped me up, and basically brought me to a happy place. I enjoyed listening to a playlist my sister had made which I enjoy almost all the songs, but I did skip a few since I tend to care more about lyrics then sound and found some made me uncomfortable, or at least the subject matter of the lyrics I felt could have a bad effect because they promoted topics and situations with which I disagree.

I also brought my Nintendo 3DS with me and played a few games that require socialization so I think that is also pretty good. It is a way to come together with other people. But I also became a little too obsessed with getting this one achievement and that probably was bad because looking at it now, I didn't get it, I probably should have let it go sooner and not wasted time and energy especially because it has no long-term effects or really anything to do with real life.

I think overall despite the weekend probably tripling my media usage and exposure it was all fairly good because most of it promoted good things and overall was pretty positive.
